Sports medicine was originally created as a specialty designed to assist athletes with a combination of physical training and education to enable them to build strength and enhance their abilities and skills. Olympians in the 1968 Summer Olympics were one of the first groups of athletes who had access to physicians who specialized in sports injuries and ways to prevent their occurrence. Over time, more people began seeking medical care in connection with sports and physical activity, which led to the designation of sports medicine as an official medical specialty. The basis of sports medicine is to minimize injury risk. When injuries happen, physicians assist patients with comprehensive care for recovery. Newer sports medicine advances have led to numerous improvements in treatments, which enable people of all ages to lead active and pain-free lives.
Regenerative medicine encompasses many new and promising medical treatments, which can help patients with sports-related injuries, overuse injuries, and degenerative illnesses such as arthritis. Research into cell biology has unveiled new approaches to healing that assist the body with its innate ability to heal itself. Harnessing this power, regenerative medicine uses a patient’s own healthy cells for concentrated healing of injuries and illnesses. Stem cells can develop into new healthy cells in joints and elsewhere in the body. In fact, new advances in regenerative medicine is even showing promise in the treatment of heart disease and diabetes.
Applying the properties of regenerative medicine to musculoskeletal care has exciting possibilities. People experiencing bone or joint injuries and degeneration often have pain, reduced range of motion, and inflammation.
